Welcome to Year 1!
Welcome to Year 1 at Witton Gilbert Primary School. Our teacher is called Mrs Hodgson and our teaching assistant is Mrs McPherson. Mrs Hallatt works with us too.
General Information
We have P.E. on Wednesdays and Fridays. Mr Graham teaches us PE on Wednesdays and Mrs Hodgson teaches us on Fridays. We give homework on a Friday and ask for it to be returned on a Monday or Tuesday. We change reading books on a Friday but adults in school may read with your child on any day, so please ensure that your child’s reading books are in their bags each day. Reading organisers are provided for every child and we ask that parents listen to their child read as least 3 times a week. If you give them the opportunity to read more often, this will only benefit their learning. Reading rewards will be given to children who have at least 3 reading signatures in their reading record each week.
What does our school day look like?
Our first lesson of the day is phonics where we split into smaller groups with Year 2 & 3 to learn new sounds and practise our reading. We follow the Read Write Inc. phonics scheme which you can read more about on our reading page on the school website. We then have our English and Maths lessons with break and snack in between. We have our lunch in the hall and we enjoy playing outside after we have eaten. After lunch, we have a short whole class handwriting and phonics session. Our afternoon lessons might be science, art, DT, computing, religious education, music, P.E., geography, history or PSHCE. We have a short play time and story time in the afternoons too. We are really lucky to have our own playground outside the classroom.
What kinds of things do we do in Year 1?
In science we look at the changing seasons and explore how the school environment changes over the year. In English, we enjoy reading books such as Nibbles The Book Monster, Goldilocks and Just the One Bear, Izzy Gizmo and The Lion Inside. We study the books and then do lots of writing activities. In maths, we complete lots of practical activities and written work and explore areas of maths such as number, shape and space and fractions.
We focus on traditional tales in the Autumn term such as Little Red Riding Hood, The Gingerbread Man, Three Billy Goats Gruff, The 3 Little Pigs and Goldilocks and the 3 Bears.

We share learning and resources through Class Dojo. Parents and children are able to post messages, photos and videos and parents can see work and send messages too. This is a really strong way of keeping our learning up to date and staying connected with our class. If you have any difficulties accessing Class Dojo, please contact the school office for further support.
If you have any further questions please contact school using the details on the contact page.
