How we support children/young people with SEND starting at our school
Transition into Reception for children with SEND is planned in advance through consultation with parents. Reception teaching staff visit children in their nursery settings or at home to discuss transition methods and how to support smooth transition into school. Many of our pupils attend Witton Gilbert Nursery, which although a private nursery, is situated on school premises. Close links familiarise many of these children with school routines prior to commencing Reception. Sometimes shorter sessions are planned initially to enable the child (and the family) to gain confidence in Reception or other year groups, if starting in other year groups.
How we support children/young people with SEND moving between classes in our school
Visits to different classrooms and locations that the child will access in the school are built into the daily routine well in advance to enable the child to build relationships with the staff and familiarise themselves with the environment.
How we support children/young people with SEND leaving our school
We arrange extra support and visits for pupils with SEND, in liaison with their chosen secondary or special school. We will also arrange meetings with the secondary school staff, families and primary staff to ensure that transition is as smooth as possible.
